Nudge Challenge Week 32 = Joy

NUDGED: "Give in to an impulse that gives me joy"

BACKSTORY: It is not a coincidence that so many of my nudge challenges relate to joy in some way. That is one of the major goals of this project - to find greater joy in life and to get out of my comfort zone. This nudge gave me permission to follow joy whenever an idea came to me.  Going in to the week, I had no idea when or where or what form this nudge would take....but I was excited to find out!

QUOTE: "When you follow your bliss, doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors; and where there wouldn't be a door for anyone else." - Joseph Campbell

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK: Implementing this nudge was highly dependent on what I was feeling on a certain week. I decided to "go with the flow" for whatever my mind was interested in this week, which would be totally different on any given week. I gave myself permission to be engrossed in whatever it was that gave me joy. It didn't matter if others would find joy in it, but that I did.

It ended up being a book - big surprise! Ha! I started reading the first book in the "Outlander" series (600+ pages!) and got caught up in the story and characters. It drew me in. In the evenings, I gave in to the impulse to read and be immersed in the time travel/romance story, ignoring the other tasks I could be doing at home (laundry, dishes, vacuuming, etc.). While my house wasn't as clean as normal, I did feel happier this week.

I finished the book (wow!), then read online comments from other fans to get new perspectives, then watched the television series on Netflix. All these things allowed me to be completely engrossed in this particular interest of mine. I pushed off thoughts of guilt throughout the week, giving myself permission because it was a nudge. It was a good week!!

Special note: I really enjoyed this book but it is not for everyone. There was strong language, lots of violence described in horrifying detail, and difficult situations (like rape) that others may not be comfortable with. If you decide to check it out, please be aware of this ahead of time!

LESSONS LEARNED: Oddly enough, with all the nudges relating to joy in some way, this was the first week I actually put into practice what I learned. I enjoyed being in the "flow" of something that interested me and felt sad to see the week end. I then realized I can continue to add moments of joy to each of my days, intentionally. So this morning (Sunday), I decided to spend time sewing this afternoon as it gives me joy (and breaks up my normal routine!).

The question I will ask myself frequently in the future: what can I do today that gives me joy? Then do it.

NEXT UP: When I first set out on this nudges challenge and wrote my original list, this was the first nudge that came to mind (odd, but true!). My challenge this week is to "master the messy bun/top knot."  Ha! I'm excited!!! It may not turn out well but I am going to attempt it. Wish me luck!
