Nudge Challenge Week 52 = Big Spender! & Finish Line?

NUDGED: "Risk losing money"

BACKSTORY: I am naturally a saver and don't like to risk money when there is a chance that I will lose it. I like to receive something when I spend money! I have never purchased a lottery ticket, and don't normally gamble more than a few dollars. Thus, this challenge is perfect for nudging me out of my financial comfort zone. It's time to spend some money!

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK: I had to make a plan first before I spent some money this week (go planners!). One of the guidelines of my Nudges Project is that it has to be inexpensive. This ruled out a trip to the casino, which also didn't work due to time constraints. I decided buying lottery tickets was a better option for me then, as they are less expensive and easily accessible.

I realized I didn't know what I was doing and didn't want to go alone, so I recruited my husband to go with me for the big purchase.

We went to a gas station on Tuesday evening so I could purchase scratch tickets. I told the clerk about my nudges project and asked what the most popular ones were as it was my first time buying. I was surprised by all the options! On her recommendations, I bought 4 tickets and spent $10.

We went home and I carefully scratched off the tickets based on the rules on the back (yay rules!). I won $5 on the first card, lost on the second, won $2 on the third, and lost on the fourth. I made $7 in total, and actually had fun while doing it!

I went back to a gas station a few days later to pick up my winnings. The clerk asked me if I wanted to buy more tickets, but I declined. I won!

LESSONS LEARNED: I told the store clerk about my nudges project when I was buying my tickets, and was embarrassed to admit it was my first time to purchase lottery tickets. She was very supportive and seemed interested in my project. I realized I have told many people about this project - my family, friends, coworkers, chiropractor, doctor, hair stylist, and beautician.

It always makes me feel vulnerable to share about my project initially, but people are always very encouraging and supportive. It's easy to stick to "safe" topics like the weather, but it is so rewarding to talk about a project that really matters and is changing my life, one nudge at a time. I have even inspired some people to review their own goals and get out of their comfort zones too! LOVE IT!

Bottom line for me - be open about my nudges with others, even if it makes me feel stupid or vulnerable. You never know who you might inspire!

SPECIAL NOTE: I completed my 52nd nudge this week, which is the time frame of the original 52Nudges project. Completing 52 was my goal over a year ago when I started this project. I did it! What now? Well, my list includes 86 items and I am really enjoying working on nudges each week, so I will keep going! I hope you will continue to read along each week to see how it goes! I appreciate your support and interest in my project!

NEXT UP: My new nudge for the week is to "meditate for 5 days". I have tried meditation in the past but it never lasted long. I either had too many thoughts running through my head or I fell asleep. There are many benefits to meditation though, so I am excited (and nervous) to give it a try!
