Nudge Challenge Week 25 = Capturing Joy

NUDGED: "Take a photo each day of a thing I love"

BACKSTORY: Each night, I have been writing down a few moments of joy that happened that day. This daily habit has been re-training my brain to look for and remember good moments that happened each day. It's too easy for me to dwell on the negative things otherwise! My intention for this nudge has a similar purpose - to focus on everyday things around me that bring me joy. For 7 days, I want to focus on the things I love. Minimum requirement: 7 photos for 7 days.

QUOTE: "The best way to capture moments is to pay attention. This is how we cultivate mindfulness." - Jon Kabat-Zinn

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK: What a fun week! The challenge was to take ONE photo a day, but I found myself taking several photos each day of things I love.

The first day (Sunday), I captured books on my bookshelf (LOVE!), "Becoming" book by Michelle Obama that I am currently reading after being on the library's waiting list for two months, and myself at the power rack at the gym (LOVE feeling strong!). This was just the first day of the nudge so I worried I would run out of things to take pictures of by the end of the week. Boy was I wrong!

I continued to take pictures each day until I had an excellent collection of photos on my phone of things I love, including: my Bible study lesson and morning coffee, slides at a seminar showing my love of learning, a healthy lunch, downtown landscape that has me in awe each morning, our dog Coco, my husband, family celebrating birthdays, water bottle with a beloved college group's logo, flowers, perfect-looking salad, fun coffee cups, food on Friday at work, and artwork that I love showing light streaming through trees - ALL from this week!

I noticed some photos represented multiple things I love. For example, the photo of my water bottle with the group's logo demonstrates my pride for that group (ha!), my ability and enjoyment in drinking water all day, and my gratitude for having access to clean water.

It was fun to see what lights me up when the week was done - my family, Bible study, coffee, books, learning, eating well, exercising - no surprises!

LESSONS LEARNED:

1) Focusing on taking one picture every day and them adding up throughout the week to a full, happy collection, was really rewarding. Little steps each day result in big progress!

2) I am grateful for the technology (cell phone) that easily takes and saves pictures. It makes me happy now to have my phone gallery filled with things that make me happy.

NEXT UP: A challenge to confront my perfectionism traits head on - "do something I am bad at". As someone who doesn't like doing things that I am not good at, this week will be tough!
